The route: Paris → Barcelona (west to east to south)

This route flows logically by train, minimises backtracking, and hits the eight most compelling cities in Europe for a first-timer. Flying into Paris and out of Barcelona (or Rome) gives you the best flight prices.

Days 1–2🇫🇷 Paris, France

Eiffel Tower (book tickets in advance), Louvre, Montmartre, Seine riverside walk, baguette from a boulangerie. Stay near République for best value.

Day 3🇧🇪 Brussels, Belgium (half day)

Stop en route to Amsterdam. Grand-Place, waffles, moules frites, Manneken Pis. 2 hours by train from Paris.

Days 3–4🇳🇱 Amsterdam, Netherlands

Canal bike ride, Rijksmuseum (Rembrandt, Vermeer), Anne Frank House (book weeks ahead), Vondelpark, Jordaan neighbourhood. 3 hours from Brussels.

Day 5🇩🇪 Berlin, Germany

Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Wall Memorial, East Side Gallery, Checkpoint Charlie, Museum Island. Nightlife in Kreuzberg or Prenzlauer Berg. 6 hours from Amsterdam by train.

Day 6🇨🇿 Prague, Czech Republic

Old Town Square, Prague Castle, Charles Bridge at dawn, Josefov Jewish Quarter. One of Europe's most beautiful cities — and one of the cheapest. 4.5 hours from Berlin.

Days 7–8🇦🇹 Vienna, Austria

Schönbrunn Palace, Belvedere Museum (Klimt's The Kiss), Naschmarkt food market, Prater park, Vienna State Opera. Coffee house culture. 4 hours from Prague.

Day 9🇭🇺 Budapest, Hungary

Széchenyi thermal baths, Fisherman's Bastion, Ruin bars in the Jewish Quarter, Parliament building by the Danube. 2.5 hours from Vienna. Extremely affordable.

Days 10–11🇮🇹 Rome, Italy

Colosseum (book in advance), Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Campo de' Fiori. Fly or take overnight train from Budapest.

Days 12–14🇪🇸 Barcelona, Spain

Sagrada Família (book months ahead), Park Güell, Gothic Quarter, La Boqueria market, Barceloneta beach. 10.5 hours from Rome by overnight train.

Interrail pass — do you need one?

For this route, a 15-day continuous Interrail Global Pass costs around €400–500 for adults. It's worth it if you're making 6+ long-distance journeys. However, for high-speed trains (Paris to Brussels, Paris to Amsterdam) and overnight trains, you still need to pay a seat reservation fee on top of the pass (usually €5–40 per journey). Budget for roughly €80–120 extra in seat reservations.

Alternative: for shorter trips or fewer countries, pre-booking individual tickets through Trainline or direct rail websites (SNCF for France, DB for Germany, NS for Netherlands) can actually be cheaper than the pass if you book 2-3 months ahead.

Essential Europe travel tips

Book hostels in Paris, Amsterdam, and Barcelona at least 4-6 weeks ahead — they sell out fast in summer. Prague, Vienna, and Budapest are significantly cheaper and easier to find last-minute rooms. Use Hostelworld or Booking.com for comparisons. Overnight trains save both time and a night's accommodation — the Budapest to Rome sleeper is a great option. Download the Trainline app for real-time delays and connections. Always validate your train ticket before boarding in Italy and France or risk a fine. Carry euros and local currency — some Eastern European countries still prefer cash.
