AI travel planners have gone from novelty to genuinely useful in the past year. But with so many options — ChatGPT, Wanderlog, Google Trips, and newer tools like Voyagea — it's hard to know which one to actually use.

We tested each one with the same prompt: "7 days in Japan, budget $1,500, solo traveller, interested in history and street food." Here's what happened.

What makes a good AI travel planner?

Before comparing tools, here's what actually matters when planning a trip with AI. The best AI travel planner should give you a realistic day-by-day itinerary with specific timings, real cost estimates (not vague ranges), a map showing your route, and the flexibility to tweak things easily. It should also understand context — a budget traveller in Japan needs very different advice from a luxury traveller.

2. ChatGPT — Powerful but needs work to be useful

ChatGPT (GPT-4) can build a reasonable itinerary if you know how to prompt it. The problem is it doesn't have a map, doesn't show real costs, and requires multiple follow-up prompts to get specific recommendations. It's a good starting point but you'll spend 30+ minutes refining it.

For our Japan test, ChatGPT gave a solid itinerary but with no map, vague cost estimates ("budget around $150/day"), and generic restaurant suggestions. Useful, but not a complete travel planning tool.

3. Wanderlog — Good for organising, weak on AI

Wanderlog is primarily a trip organiser with a basic AI layer on top. It's great for building collaborative trip documents and has a solid maps integration. But the AI itinerary generation is basic — it produces generic suggestions without the depth or speed of a purpose-built AI planner.

4. Google Trips (via Google Maps / Gemini) — Convenient but limited
