Best AI Travel Planner in 2025 (Free Tools Compared)
Published March 2026 · 7 min read · By Dev Shah
AI travel planners have gone from novelty to genuinely useful in the past year. But with so many options — ChatGPT, Wanderlog, Google Trips, and newer tools like Voyagea — it's hard to know which one to actually use.
We tested each one with the same prompt: "7 days in Japan, budget $1,500, solo traveller, interested in history and street food." Here's what happened.
What makes a good AI travel planner?
Before comparing tools, here's what actually matters when planning a trip with AI. The best AI travel planner should give you a realistic day-by-day itinerary with specific timings, real cost estimates (not vague ranges), a map showing your route, and the flexibility to tweak things easily. It should also understand context — a budget traveller in Japan needs very different advice from a luxury traveller.
1. Voyagea — Best overall AI travel planner (free)
Voyagea is purpose-built for travel planning. You type a destination and it builds a complete itinerary in under 10 seconds — with a live interactive map, day-by-day schedule, budget breakdown, hotel suggestions, and hyperlocal tips you won't find on TripAdvisor.
For our Japan prompt, Voyagea produced a detailed 7-day plan covering Tokyo (3 days), Kyoto (2 days), and Osaka (2 days), with transport instructions including the JR Pass, estimated costs per day, and specific restaurants with price ranges. The map showed every location pinned. It then suggested weather-appropriate clothing and gave a full budget summary of $1,340 — under the target.
Standout features: Interactive map with all pins, budget tracker, TripCrew for group trips, V-Passport to track visited countries, PDF and calendar export.
Price: Free. Paid plans launch April 2026.
2. ChatGPT — Powerful but needs work to be useful
ChatGPT (GPT-4) can build a reasonable itinerary if you know how to prompt it. The problem is it doesn't have a map, doesn't show real costs, and requires multiple follow-up prompts to get specific recommendations. It's a good starting point but you'll spend 30+ minutes refining it.
For our Japan test, ChatGPT gave a solid itinerary but with no map, vague cost estimates ("budget around $150/day"), and generic restaurant suggestions. Useful, but not a complete travel planning tool.
3. Wanderlog — Good for organising, weak on AI
Wanderlog is primarily a trip organiser with a basic AI layer on top. It's great for building collaborative trip documents and has a solid maps integration. But the AI itinerary generation is basic — it produces generic suggestions without the depth or speed of a purpose-built AI planner.
4. Google Trips (via Google Maps / Gemini) — Convenient but limited
Google's travel features are scattered across Maps, Search, and Gemini. For simple searches like "things to do in Tokyo" they're excellent. For building a structured multi-day itinerary, they fall short. There's no budget tracking, no group planning, and no persistent trip document.

Bottom line
If you want the fastest, most complete AI travel planner that's free, Voyagea wins. It's the only tool built specifically for the full travel planning workflow — from itinerary to map to budget to export. ChatGPT is a great backup if you enjoy prompting. Wanderlog is worth using for collaborative trip docs. Google is fine for quick searches.
