5 things to know before using visa on arrival
Always carry a return ticket
Even for visa-free countries, immigration may ask for proof you are leaving. Have a return or onward ticket ready — even a refundable one booked just for this purpose.
Carry USD 100–200 in cash
Visa-on-arrival fees are usually charged in USD cash. Some counters don't accept cards. Always carry small USD bills — exact change helps avoid long waits at immigration.
Check validity dates — they change
Visa rules change without notice. Always check the official embassy website of your destination 2–3 weeks before travel, not just travel blogs. Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia have updated their rules multiple times recently.
Hotel booking required at most VOA counters
Most visa-on-arrival counters ask for your first-night hotel booking. Have it printed or saved offline. An Airbnb or hostel confirmation works too.
eVisas beat VOA queues
Countries like Vietnam, Kenya, Rwanda, and Gabon offer eVisas you can get online before departure. Always use the eVisa option if available — the VOA queue at busy airports like Bangkok and Bali can be 1–2 hours.
Countries Indians cannot visit (restricted)
Indian passport holders currently cannot visit Pakistan (diplomatic restrictions) and face significant difficulties entering Afghanistan and Iran (travel advisories, limited consular support). Most other countries in the world are accessible with advance visa application — including the USA, UK, Schengen area, Canada, and Australia, all of which require applying at the respective embassy before travel.
