How to Travel Europe on a Budget 2025
Published March 2026 · 10 min read · By Dev Shah
Two weeks in Europe from India can be done for ₹1.5–2 lakh total including flights. The perception that Europe is expensive comes from tourists who stay in city-centre hotels, eat at restaurants near major sights, and take taxis everywhere. This guide shows you how Indian travellers are doing Europe for a fraction of that cost.

6 Europe budget travel tips that actually move the needle
Fly into one hub, out of another — avoid backtracking
Open-jaw flights (Mumbai→Frankfurt, London→Mumbai) often cost the same as return but save you from retracing your route. Air India, Lufthansa, British Airways, and Emirates all serve Europe from major Indian cities.
Flixbus is your best friend for inter-city travel
Flixbus connects almost every European city for ₹300–1,200 per leg. It is slow (3–6 hours between cities) but extremely affordable. Book online 2–4 weeks ahead for the cheapest fares. For trains, book via Trainline or Omio.
Stay in hostels — European hostels are excellent
Unlike India, European hostels are clean, social, and well-run. Dorms in Lisbon, Prague, and Budapest cost ₹1,200–2,200 per night. Most have common kitchens to cook your own meals. Use Hostelworld or Booking.com.
Visit free attractions — most European cities are 50% free
Almost every major European museum has free days: British Museum (always free), Louvre (first Sunday of month), Vatican Museums (last Sunday of month), Uffizi (first Sunday). National parks, viewpoints, beaches, and old towns cost nothing.
Eat at markets and lunch specials instead of tourist restaurants
European countries often serve a "menu del día" (menu of the day) at lunch — 3 courses for ₹600–1,000. Street food and market stalls are half the price of restaurants. Supermarkets like Lidl, Aldi, and Mercadona are excellent for breakfast supplies.
Apply for Schengen visa through the country of longest stay
Apply at the embassy of whichever Schengen country you will spend the most days in. France, Germany, and Spain embassies are well-staffed and process quickly. Apply 6–8 weeks before departure. You will need bank statements, accommodation bookings, and travel insurance.
Schengen visa for Indians — what you need to know
The Schengen visa costs ₹7,500 (€80) and allows you to visit 27 European countries within 90 days. You need to apply at the embassy of your first or longest-stay country. Required documents: confirmed hotel bookings, travel insurance (minimum €30,000 coverage), 3 months of bank statements, leave letter from employer, and a cover letter explaining your itinerary. Processing is typically 5–15 working days — apply early.
Best months for budget Europe travel from India
Shoulder season — April–May and September–October — gives you the best combination of good weather, lower hotel prices, and manageable crowds. July and August are peak season: prices surge 40–70% and popular spots are very crowded. January–February is cheapest for flights but weather limits outdoor sightseeing in Northern Europe.
